Ryan Owens

Track Sprint Cyclist -  GB Cycling Team

Olympic, World and Commonwealth medallist & National Champion Individual & Team Sprint

DOB: 29th September 1995
Lives: London, UK

When the then 20 year old Ryan was named in the 2016 Olympics squad as a reserve to the Team Sprint squad, comprising Jason Kenny, Philip Hindes and Callum Skinner, after only 6 months in the Great Britain Cycling Team Senior Academy it was the culmination of a meteoric rise through the ranks.

The sprinter from Bedfordshire was born into a keen cycling family - his father and grandfather having both ridden competitively - Ryan started the sport at the age of 11 and was racing by the time he had reached 16. It was obvious that the rider’s future lay in sprint events and after winning numerous junior medals Ryan headed to Loughborough University in 2014 and went on to dominate the BUCS University National track championships, winning three golds (individual sprint, kilo and team sprint).

In Montichiari, Italy, in July 2016 at the UEC Under-23 Euro Track Champs, Ryan won gold in the Team Sprint alongside Joe Truman and Jack Carlin. In the same year he travelled to Rio Olympics as a reserve and also went on to add European Track Champs silver and UCI World Cup golds in Glasgow and Apeldoorn (Netherlands).

In 2017 Ryan took his first National Title becoming champion in the Individual Sprint and taking the Team Sprint the very next day – a title that he successfully defended at the beginning of 2018. Owens then won his first-ever World Champs medal in 2018 in Apeldoorn - winning silver in the Team Sprint as part of a five-man squad alongside Jason Kenny, Phil Hindes, Carlin and Truman. In the 2020 World Track Champs in Berlin, Ryan won silver again in the Team Sprint alongside Jack Carlin and Jason Kenny.

Ryan has also been a key member of the England team at the Commonwealth Games. 2018 saw Ryan travel to the Gold Coast as part of Team England's 27-strong cycling squad where he won silver in the men’s team sprint, and finished 6th in the men’s individual sprint.

His dream came true when he was selected to represent Team GB in Tokyo where he competed on the world stage and came home with a silver medal.
